West Attica University and approaching robotics without funding

At the University of West Attica, a robotics group builds competitive machines from scavenged parts and stubbornness, with almost no budget to speak of.

Egaleo, in the western sprawl of Athens, is not where the guidebooks send you, and the June heat had that flat metallic quality that makes you doubt the address written in your own notebook. I arrived sweating and an hour late anyway, and the security guard waved me through without asking anything, which I later understood was less about trust than about the fact that nobody expects a visitor to the workshop on a Wednesday afternoon.

The University of West Attica is young, at least as an institution. It was stitched together in 2018 out of two older technical schools, and you can still feel the seams. Corridors that were built for one bureaucracy now serve another. The room I wanted was on a lower floor, past a vending machine that had eaten someone's coins and kept the evidence taped to its front in the form of an angry handwritten note.

The workshop itself is smaller than I had pictured. Two long tables, a wall of mismatched drawers, and a smell of solder and warm plastic that I would come to associate with the whole trip. Four students were there when I came in, and over the afternoon the number drifted between three and six as people arrived from classes or left for them. Nobody was in charge in any way I could see, which turned out to be roughly the point.

What they build are competition robots. Small autonomous machines that have to follow a line, or sort colored blocks, or navigate a course faster than the machine from some other school. The rules change every year and the budgets, as far as I could tell, do not, because there essentially are none. One of the students showed me a chassis cut from a sheet of acrylic that had been, in a previous life, part of a display stand somebody was throwing out.

This is the thing that took me a while to absorb. I had come expecting a lab, with the clean surfaces and the labeled equipment that the word implies. Instead the group runs on salvage. Motors pulled from dead printers. A bin of servos that a graduate donated when he left. Sensors bought in ones and twos, argued over, and treated with a care that I have not seen applied to far more expensive gear elsewhere.

I watched one of them try to get a wheeled unit to stop drifting left. It drifted left for about forty minutes. The fix, when it came, was not elegant. Someone shimmed one motor mount with a folded strip of a cardboard coffee cup, and the thing ran straight, and everyone treated this as a completely ordinary solution rather than the small indignity it clearly was. I asked whether they would replace the cardboard with something proper before the competition. A woman at the far table looked at me and said, in effect, that the cardboard was proper, because it worked and it cost nothing, and I did not have a good answer to that.

The coffee, I should say, was terrible, and I drank a great deal of it. It came from a machine in the corridor and tasted of the cup more than of coffee. This detail matters only because the machine broke on my second day and the resulting crisis was more animated than anything I saw involving the robots.

The older tradition behind all this runs deeper than the university's official age suggests. One of the departments here traces its work with automated machines back to the Piraeus technical school of the late eighties, and a couple of the staff spoke about that lineage with the mild pride of people who know their corner of the world is not glamorous and have made peace with it. Robotics in Greece does not have the money it has in richer countries. Everyone in the room knew this. It did not seem to bother them so much as define the shape of what they did.

Down the hall there is a proper research lab, funded, with a humanoid robot that can wave and recognize faces and do the things that get filmed for the university's promotional videos. The students showed it to me almost as a courtesy. Their affection was clearly for the scrappier machines on their own tables, the ones held together with the cardboard and the donated servos, and I think they were slightly amused that I found the funded robot less interesting than they had expected a visiting writer to.

What do they get out of it. I kept circling that question and never got a clean answer, partly because I was asking it in the wrong way. Some of them want jobs in the field, which are thin on the ground here. Some of them, I suspect, simply liked the room and the company and the particular satisfaction of making a stubborn object behave. One of the engineers told me that the competitions matter less for winning than for the deadline, because a deadline is the only thing that forces a half-built robot to become a whole one.

I had assumed, coming in, that scarcity was the enemy of this kind of work. That with more money they would simply do more. By the end of the week I was less sure. The constraint was doing something to how they thought, forcing a kind of resourcefulness that a well-stocked lab might have let them skip. I am wary of romanticizing this, because being broke is not a virtue and they would have taken the money in a heartbeat. But the skill of looking at a dead printer and seeing a drive train is real, and it is not taught in the funded rooms.

On my last afternoon the left-drifting robot finally ran the full course without error. There was no cheering. Someone noted the time on a phone, someone else wrote it on the whiteboard next to three worse times from earlier in the week, and then they started arguing about whether the sensor was mounted a millimeter too high. I left them to it. Outside, the heat had not broken, and I got on the bus east, and watched the western suburbs slide past while a cardboard shim held a small machine straight somewhere behind me.
